The release

A 41-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly kicked and choked a child known to him during a family violence incident yesterday afternoon.

About 2pm yesterday (Sunday, 18 October 2026), the man returned to the residence that he shared with his partner and the child before getting into a verbal altercation with the child.

He then allegedly began to punch a window and when the child confronted him, he kicked her and choked her.

She escaped his hold and began to call police when the man grabbed a piece of broken glass and threw it at her.

Police will also allege that during the incident, he kicked his partner when she attempted to intervene.

A neighbour also called police and about 2:30pm, officers arrived at the home in north Canberra and arrested the man.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday, 19 October 2026), charged with two counts of aggravated common assault, and one count each of choking/suffocating/strangling another person and property damage.
