The release
A man has been charged with murder after the death of a woman in the state’s north overnight.
About 9.35pm (Saturday 19 September 2026), police were called to a property on Ironbark Road, Mole River – about 40 minutes west of Tenterfield – following reports of a domestic violence incident.
On arrival, officers attached to New England Police District were told a 37-year-old man had allegedly entered a property and attempted to steal a vehicle before assaulting the homeowner, a 74-year-old man.
Police arrested the 37-year-old before attending the neighbouring property, where they located the body of a 70-year-old woman.
The house the woman was found in had also been partially damaged by fire.
Police established crime scenes at both locations and commenced an investigation.
Following inquires, the 37-year-old man – who was taken to Tenterfield Police Station – was charged with murder.
Police will allege in court the 37-year-old and 70-year-old were known to each other.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Local Court 5 tomorrow (Monday 21 September 2026).
